Santa’s Gift House is back

HERRIN — Volunteers are needed for the 20th anniversary of Santa’s Gift House. A fundraiser for Williamson County Child Advocacy Center, the event will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 1 in the old Maytag building, 410 E. Lyerla Drive, in Herrin.
WCCAC Executive Director Leah Brown said the center is seeking donations for the gift house. She said the event would not be possible without the donations from local residents and members of the business community.
On Dec. 1, donated items will be on display in a store-like setting, and children ages 4 to 12 may shop for Christmas presents. Young shoppers may purchase up to 10 presents.
Most gifts range from 50 cents for $4, but a few are priced at $5. All of the proceeds will go to the center.
Children who plan to shop at the gift house should plan to bring their parents to registration at the Maytag building. Registration will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 26, 27, 28 and 29. During registration, parents may reserve a block of time for their children to shop.
“This is new this year, as we hope to reduce the waiting time for children to shop,” Brown said. If a child does not have a reserved time to shop, she said the child will be worked into the shopping area as soon as a spot is available.
Santa Claus will be on hand to greet youngsters, who will have the opportunity to get their picture taken with him for only $1.
The center is seeking monetary donations, as well as craft items, baked goods, new or lightly used toys, jewelry, books, etc., as well as items that can be part of a raffle. New clothing, ties, etc. will be appreciated; however, no used clothing will be accepted.
WCCAC at 501 S. 14th St. in Herrin opened in 1992 and continues to serve the special needs of sexually abused children in Williamson and Franklin counties. The center receives federal, state and local funds, but depends upon donations and fundraisers to supplement.
Donations for Santa’s Gift House may be dropped off from 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 26 to 29 at the Maytag building. For more information, call the center at 618-942-3800.

WT athletic center gift helps Buffs share their pride

As the West Texas A&M University football team fights for a playoff spot, it prepares for games this year in new facilities thanks in part to a large gift to the university through its Share your Pride fundraising campaign, Athletic Director Michael McBroom said.

First United Bank President Ray Bain and wife Barbara, who attended the university in the late 1950s and early 1960s, watched their son, Mike, play on the football team in the 1980s and are longtime Buffs fans.

Once they heard of the campaign in 2010, they wanted to help the university build sports facilities and found an opportunity to help fund a new athletic center that now bears their last name, Ray Bain said.

Bain did not disclose how much he and his wife donated to the university to build the $4-million Bain Athletic Center that is being constructed in three phases.

“I would say it’s pretty sizable,” Bain said. “It ran up close to a seven-figure amount.”

The university launched the public portion of the $35-million fundraising campaign in August. The campaign hopes to raise $15 million for scholarships, $8 million for
faculty and program support, and $12 million for capital projects.

The athletic center sits on the west side of Buffalo Sports Park on campus and houses a 6,700-square-foot football locker room that has lockers, showers, laundry facilities, equipment storage space and a place to review game film, McBroom said.

McBroom said the facility marks the first time the football team has had its own locker room in three years. He said the football facilities previously were spread out throughout campus and players would often change into their equipment in their dorm rooms.

The team now has a place to shower, change clothes and watch game film in one location next to their practice facility, McBroom said.

“The ability to have 140 football players in a locker room and to be able to quickly shower and get back to their classes or grab dinner after practice, our coaches can get the laundry done all in one place and we’re not hauling stuff around, it’s very nice, very convenient,” he said. “It’s the best locker room the school has ever had.”

Mike Bain, who now is executive vice president of First United Bank, said the athletic center is something the university has talked about for a long time, and he is proud his parents were able to be a substantial part of its creation.

“It’s been an ongoing love of theirs to give back to WT,” he said. “When this athletic center came about, this has obviously been in the works for many, many years and with the new sports complex, the athletic center was kind of the crown jewel or the finishing building out there.”

McBroom said the athletic center eventually will include a weight room, athletic training facilities, an academic support area, office space for coaches and staff, and a champions atrium to honor alumni and Buffs sports history.

“We’ve kind of been spread out all over campus for 50 to 60 years,” McBroom said. “What it will ultimately enable us to do is get everybody or the majority of people under one roof and gives us a centralized location for athletic training.”

He said all of the 440 athletes on the university’s sports teams eventually will be able to use the weight rooms and training rooms once they are completed.

“It’s been very satisfying to know where we were with our facilities, which was certainly not great, to now walk out and know that we have some of the best facilities of really any school in the country in athletics,” McBroom said.

Tin Can Tourists trekking to Kearney for Lincoln Highway centennial

KEARNEY — Enthusiasts of vintage camper trailers and motor coaches will be among Kearney’s visitors in summer 2013 for the National Lincoln Highway Association Centennial.

The June 30-July 1 celebration already has attracted auto clubs across the United States, a Packard owners group and a Scandinavian car club.

Now, members of the Tin Can Tourists camper club plan to be in Kearney to mark the 100th birthday of the United States’ first transcontinental highway.

“We want to have a nice group of trailers and motor coaches that represents various manufacturers and years,” said Forrest and Jeri Bone, directors of the 1,000-member Tin Can Tourists.

The group’s members are from the United States, Europe, Australia and Asia.

So far, 10 members have committed to be in Kearney, but eventually about 30 camper club members are expected to set up their rigs at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds, said Forrest and Jeri.

“We are very excited to have a group like this be a part of the celebration. It will add the nostalgic experience we are expecting in a national celebration such as this,” said Sarah Focke of the Kearney Visitors Bureau, co-chairperson of the Lincoln Highway festivities.

The Tin Can Club caravan will get under way June 22, 2013, in Haysville, Ohio, and arrive in Kearney June 30, 2013.

Some auto enthusiasts planning to attend the centennial will cross half of the United States on U.S. Highway 30 from New York City and San Francisco, as they retrace the route of the original Lincoln Highway.

The American Bus Association in September designated the National Lincoln Highway Centennial as one of its Top 100 Events of 2013.

Unlike modern roads that are designed and paid for by government, most of the Lincoln Highway took shape because of donors and volunteers.

A group of auto manufacturers and others organized the Lincoln Highway Association and designated the route for the transcontinental highway in 1913 — about 50 years after the Union Pacific became the nation’s first transcontinental railroad.About 80 percent of the original Lincoln Highway was gravel. The rest was rutted pasture, asphalt, or hard-surfaced with bricks or concrete.

To demonstrate the advantages of paved roads, communities along the route were challenged to pave one-mile segments as their seedling miles. Grand Island was Nebraska’s first city to complete its seeding mile, followed a few weeks later by Kearney.

According to the Buffalo County Historical Society’s Buffalo Tales newsletter, the Kearney Commercial Club voted to raise funds for the seedling mile, which resulted in a concrete slab 15 feet wide and 8 inches thick.

The stretch of road on West 24th Street from 19th Avenue to 30th Avenue was said to be broad enough for two loaded hayracks to pass.

The Lincoln Highway became U.S. Highway 30 in 1929.

Speck CandyShell Case for iPhone 5: Smart & Colorful

The Speck CandyShell Flip case for iPhone 5 packs a lot of features into a slim, colorful case. A flip-back panel allows docking without removing the case and also makes it easy to insert the iPhone. There are nine multi-color combos to chose from.

The Speck CandyShell Flip case for iPhone 5 packs a lot of features into a slim, colorful case. A flip-back panel allows docking without removing the case and also makes it easy to insert the iPhone. There are nine two-tone combos to chose from.

This case looks deceptively simple at first. Then you begin to notice the details.

A flip-back that allows the phone to be inserted securely, and doubles as a kickstand.
The flip-back design also allows the edge to have a good wrap-around bezel that protects the iPhone if placed face down.
A soft inner layer that keeps the iPhone from geting scratched.
A soft but strong, pliable design that offers good protection thanks to two layers. (A patented design.)
Nine different multi-color designs to chose from.

Speck’s lettering on this case isn’t nearly as obnoxious as it is on the FabShell case. Unlike the FabShell cases which have a soft, fabric-like, textured feel, the CandyShell cases are smooth, supple, and grippy. (Note, there are several different cases in the “CandyShell” line. This one is the CandyShell Flip.

The material used for this case has a great feel, and seems grippy enough. However, Speck also has the CandyShell Grip line with added ribs.

 Using the Case

The soft inner liner makes it a bit difficult to slide the iPhone into and out of it. But with a little effort, one can get the hang of it. The flexible, plastic waistband/hinge looks and feels like it will be reasonably durable.

Like most all cases these days, there is a blackened edge around the camera aperture to absorb glare/reflections. Again, like the FabShell, the volume up and down buttons are not marked with “+” and “-”. This may also be one of the lightest single layer cases I’ve tested.

The one I was given for review is “Raspberry/Dark Raspberry/Peacock, and must be very popular because when I looked, it was out of stock. Speck’s website has feature that allows you to be notified, via email, when the case is back in stock. The website photo doesn’t quite reflect how bright and reflective these colors are.

This case is totally allergic to lint and dirt and just keeps on looking great, no matter how you handle it or where it’s been. (My desk is usually rather messy. And cat hair abounds.)

 Packaging

I wasn’t able to assess the packaging because this case was sent along with some others in a simple plastic bag. No screen protector is supplied. The warranty is Speck’s standard: one year.

End of the Line

For me, the primary benefit of the flip-back is the ability to insert and remove the iPhone properly. If you need to insert the whole assembly into a dock, that’s great too. Or you can just use the flip-back as a stand for a FaceTime session.

I loved the grip, texture and strength of this case. It stays clean and there’s a color combo for everyone. My only complaint is that, like all the Speck cases, it seems about US$5 more expensive than it should be, compared to other cases I’ve reviewed. But, in the end, the design, protection and color choices may persuade you otherwise.

New iPhone 5 maps failing healthcare seekers

Not all business decisions turn out as well as it seems they might.

It seemed to make sense for Apple to part ways with embedded technology from Google, an erstwhile ally who's now a chief competitor in the smartphone market. So, with the release of its new iOS 6 operating system, the iPhone and the iPad have jettisoned Google Maps in favor of Apple's own, self-developed mapping software. (The YouTube app is also gone from the new iPhone 5.)

As you've probably heard, the experiment has not gone very well. The homegrown software, developed in part using TomTom GPS navigation data, is riddled with errors and shortcomings.

It got so bad that Apple CEO Tim Cook felt compelled to offer a letter expressing abject regret: "We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers, and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better."

John Paczkowski, writing on the technology website All Things D, cataloged some of its failings thusly: "It offers no information about public transportation; searches for an in-town destination sometimes return results for an entirely different city; it occasionally mistakes farms for airports; some of its Dali-esque flyover imagery is lousy; and it places gas stations in utterly untenable locations."
